What is a Chalazion?

A chalazion forms when one of the tiny oil glands in the eyelid becomes blocked, resulting in swelling and discomfort. Initially, a chalazion may be mistaken for a stye, but unlike a stye, it is usually not caused by an infection, though it can still cause redness or warmth in the skin. However, if left untreated, it can grow larger, affecting your vision and causing pain.

When to Consider Chalazion Incision and Drainage

While many chalazia resolve independently or respond to warm compresses and medication, some may persist for several weeks or even months. In these cases, surgical intervention might be necessary to provide relief. You may benefit from chalazion incision and drainage if you experience any of the following:

  • Persistent lump on the eyelid
  • Discomfort or pain in the eyelid
  • Vision impairment due to the size or location of the chalazion
  • Lack of improvement with non-surgical treatments

Your Chalazion Incision and Drainage Experience

Pre-Operative Consultation

During your consultation at our Phoenix or Chandler office, one of our experienced surgeons will evaluate your condition and determine the best course of treatment. If incision and drainage are recommended, we will ensure you understand the procedure and what to expect during recovery.

The Day of Surgery

Chalazion incision and drainage is a quick and straightforward procedure, typically performed on an outpatient basis. Local anesthesia numbs the area and keeps you comfortable throughout the procedure, which generally takes less than 30 minutes.

The Procedure Itself

Once the area is numbed, your surgeon will make a small incision on the inside of the eyelid to access the blocked gland. The trapped material will be carefully drained, and the incision will be left to heal naturally without suturing. This method ensures minimal scarring and a faster recovery.

Recovery After Chalazion Surgery

Following the procedure, you will be given detailed aftercare instructions to help promote healing and prevent recurrence. Mild swelling and discomfort are normal, but these symptoms usually subside within a few days. You can expect to return to your normal activities within 24 to 48 hours, although we recommend avoiding strenuous activities for a short time.
