Overview

At Elite Plastic Surgery in the Phoenix and Chandler, AZ areas, we provide a discrete surgical labia rejuvenation—also known as labiaplasty or vaginal rejuvenation—as a procedure performed by our plastic and reconstructive surgeons, Dr. Rozbeh Torabi, Dr. Ramyar Torabi, and Dr. Radbeh Torabi. Labiaplasty reshapes and reduces the size of the labia so that they appear natural and aesthetically pleasing. Advanced aging, large-scale weight loss, birth defects, and genetics can create abnormalities in women’s labia, such as loose and hanging skin, discolored pigmentation, and other uncomfortable, unwanted symptoms. In many cases, a labia deformity is caused by excessive stretching, most commonly from childbirth, which can cause self-consciousness and anxiety in a sexual situation.

Enlarged labia can also create discomfort during intercourse, during exercise, or when wearing certain clothing. Labiaplasty has become one of the more common plastic surgeries in the United States today and can be combined with a mommy makeover (for moms wanting to rejuvenate their body back to its pre-pregnancy state) or other plastic surgery procedures as recommended. Labiaplasty puts an end to all the awkwardness by sculpting an improved vaginal appearance. Although results may vary from patient to patient, our previous Elite Plastic Surgery labiaplasty patients indicate that they have more self-esteem, increased confidence in their physical appearance, better sexual experiences, and are satisfied with their decision to have vaginal rejuvenation plastic surgery.

Do I Qualify?

If you are self-conscious about the way your vaginal area appears and you have excess skin and tissue that creates a bulge or hangs, then labiaplasty may be a good option for you. It is recommended that women wait to have this surgery until after their final pregnancy. In addition, it is important to maintain a healthy weight, as significant weight gain can compromise the results of the surgical outcome.

Women with the following conditions may seek consultation for a labiaplasty:

  • Discomfort with the size of inner labia or vaginal lips
  • Enlarged labia after pregnancy
  • Inner labia that have elongated with age
  • Labia pain, irritation, or soreness during exercises, sex, horse riding, or other daily activities and wearing tight clothing
  • Protruding or asymmetrical labia

In AZ, labiaplasty is becoming more and more popular, according to this Medscape article. There is no certain recommended age for labiaplasty. We do require that our patients be in good health, suffer from vaginal conditions that need to be rectified with the procedure, and select an adequate time gap between menstrual periods for undergoing labiaplasty.

Our Surgical Process

While labiaplasty can be performed by an OB/GYN or a plastic surgeon, it has become commonplace for this abnormal skin deformity to be addressed by a plastic surgeon so that scarring can be kept to a minimum and the overall contour and aesthetic appearance can be optimized. Under local anesthesia (which can be combined with an oral sedative or a nerve block if deemed necessary), the excess skin will be removed, and the shape of the labia will be reduced and reshaped. A common technique is to use the “V” approach, which removes the excess skin into a natural V-shape. Surgical tools are used to reshape the inner folds of the labia so they no longer protrude. Incisions are sutured closed.

It is important to find an experienced labia rejuvenation surgeon, such as Dr. Torabi, who understands that this procedure is designed for both improved appearance and function. A qualified plastic surgeon will not only address the appearance but will also preserve the feeling, nerves, and sensitivity of the labia with minimal scarring. This surgery usually takes one to two hours in the operating room.

Recovery and Healing

The healing period varies from three to seven days, depending on individual patients. Most patients are able to join work after a few days, and maximum rest is advised for a week. Sutures dissolve in 10 to 12 days. Patients can start wearing tight clothing and go cycling or horseback riding after five weeks. Sexual intercourse can be resumed after six weeks, by which time the healing is complete. Here are a few post-operative precautions to follow after labiaplasty:

  • Lie flat for much of the first 72 hours
  • Use ice therapy to control swelling
  • Rest for a week and avoid intense activities
  • Keep your vagina dry and pat it with a dry towel after cleaning the area
  • Avoid sexual intercourse for six weeks to reduce the risk of infection
  • Avoid horseback riding, cycling, and other intense activities with potential direct impact close to the vagina for five weeks

Patients will experience limited pain for two to three days and swelling for up to a week after the surgery. Your surgeon will prescribe medication to overcome these problems. You can also use ice therapy after 24 hours and for up to 72 hours to control the swelling.

Modern medical technology has made labiaplasty a safe, low-risk procedure. Mistakes and complications during surgery, however, may lead to rare side effects, such as:

  • Injury to the vagina and clitoris
  • Bleeding and scarring
  • Infection, hematoma formation, and numbness
  • Darkening and thickening of the labia
  • Uneven or asymmetric labia edge

What to Expect After Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure and is performed under anesthesia. After surgery, you should avoid strenuous activities, such as exercise, for about four to six weeks. In addition, tampons, sexual intercourse, and tight clothing should be avoided as well so that the area can properly heal.

Labiaplasty does not affect any change in sexual feeling or pleasure. It actually improves your self-esteem during intercourse and increases your functional ability without any pain attributed to the inner labia. Scarring following labiaplasty is almost completely unnoticeable.

This procedure results in a vaginal appearance that is healthy, natural, and pleasing. In addition, symptoms such as chronic irritations, sexual discomfort, etc., will be significantly reduced.
