Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

You’re likely familiar with one of the most popular cosmetic procedures on the planet, a breast augmentation, but have you heard of a breast lift? This procedure has gained momentum for years, with 143,364 performed in 2022 alone.1 What is it? The breast lift, or mastopexy procedure, is a cosmetic procedure that lifts and repositions breasts that sag or droop due to either the aging process or natural genetics. It’s an alternative option for patients who want an enhancement for their breasts, without necessarily adding volume.

Introduction

Enliven Your Bust with a Breast Lift

At Elite Plastic Surgery in Chandler and Phoenix, our plastic and reconstructive surgeons, Dr. Rozbeh Torabi and Dr. Radbeh Torabi, perform breast lift surgery (also known as a mastopexy) to elevate sagging breasts by removing excess skin, raising the breast tissue, and, if desired, the nipple. We use the most cutting-edge breast lift techniques available and take care to place incisions in areas of the breast that ensure post-surgical scars are less visible or easily covered. A breast lift will dramatically restore the suppleness and shape of your breasts, especially if they’ve changed due to the effects of the natural aging process, breastfeeding, pregnancy, or extreme weight loss. To learn more about mastopexy surgery and what it can do for you, contact Elite Plastic Surgery at our Chandler or Phoenix locations to schedule your consultation with a member of our team today.

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, medically referred to as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that raises and reshapes breasts that have lost firmness, elasticity, or youthful positioning over time. Rather than increasing breast size, a breast lift focuses on restoring the natural contour of the breasts by removing excess, stretched skin and repositioning the breast tissue and nipples to a higher location on the chest. This creates a perkier, more balanced appearance without altering the patient’s natural breast volume, unless augmentation is added (which is common for many patients).

Breast sagging can occur for many reasons, including aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, gravity, genetics, and significant weight changes. A breast lift addresses these changes by reshaping the internal breast structure and tightening the surrounding skin envelope.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Women with sagging breasts due to genetics, old age, large breast size, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss are good candidates for breast lift surgery. Age is generally not a factor here; in fact, younger patients have been seeking this procedure because it aligns with their aesthetic goals.2 During your mastopexy consultation at our Phoenix or Chandler office, you will receive a thorough assessment where the surgeon will evaluate your current breast size and shape by taking measurements. During your consultation, the surgeon may also assess the breast symmetry, skin elasticity, and bone structure.

Candidates for breast lift surgery should be non-smokers in good health who have at least one of the following concerns:
Large or lax breasts
Severe breast ptosis (sagging)
Severe breast ptosis (sagging)
Asymmetrical breasts
Large or stretched areolas
Downward-pointing nipples
Postpartum breast volume loss

Benefits of a Breast Lift

The initial benefits of the breast lift are typically visible about six weeks postoperatively. It takes four to six months for the optimal benefits to become fully visible. At this point, you’ll be delighted by uplifted, even breasts that are youthful and without excessive skin. With minimal weight fluctuations, your breast lift results can last for decades.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Your breast lift surgery will be performed while you are under general anesthesia, making the procedure pain-free. Three different types of breast lift incisions may be used depending on your unique factors, and your surgeon will choose an incision pattern for your operation based on the current size and elasticity of your breasts and areolas.

Your surgeon will then remove any excess breast skin and reposition your nipples and areolas to a natural, more youthful height, improving your breasts’ projection. If you are unhappy with your breast size, your surgeon may also perform a breast augmentation procedure with implants or fat transfer to achieve the size and shape you desire. After your breasts have been reshaped and excess skin removed, the remaining skin will be tightened, and the incisions carefully closed.

What to Expect During Your Consultation for a Breast Lift

During your consultation, you’ll meet with an expert surgeon who will listen to your concerns and collaborate with you on the development of a unique treatment plan that will help you most effectively reach your cosmetic goals.

During this initial consultation, our team will be happy to help you learn more about the differences between breast lift and breast augmentation procedures and recommend the procedure that will ultimately be best for your goals.

Every patient is different, so that results will vary from person to person. Some patients may have a breast augmentation combined with a breast lift to get a fuller and perkier bust, and we’ll be sure to help you explore these options during your consultation.

You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the procedure and recovery. Your surgeon will explain the procedure in detail, providing a clear understanding of vision placement and post-surgical scarring.

Your Guide to Post-Breast Lift Care

After your breast lift surgery, we’ll recommend that you take the following precautions:

  • No shower for 24 hours
  • Keep the incision area dry and clean
  • Avoid straining, bending, and lifting for six weeks
  • No excessive physical activity for six weeks
  • Rest is recommended for a week
  • Avoid upper arm movement and pressure on your breasts for two weeks
  • Wear a support bra for six to eight weeks

Most side effects dissipate within the first few days of treatment, and complete healing occurs in about 6 weeks. During this time, the patient must avoid strenuous exercise and lifting. Report any excessive pain or wound weeping to the plastic surgeon. Patients begin walking within hours of surgery, though it may take a few days to reach a tolerable level of comfort. Bandages and surgical drains are removed after 3–4 days, and patients can resume restricted activities after a week’s rest. As healing progresses, comfort increases, and patients are encouraged to increase their activity levels. Stitches are removed at a follow-up appointment in about 2 weeks, and the patient should return to unrestricted normal activities in 6 weeks.
