Poland Syndrome Correction Surgery – Pectoral and Breast Reconstruction – Phoenix, AZ
OVERVIEW
At Elite Plastic Surgery, our plastic and reconstructive surgeons, Dr. Torabi consult with patients, both men and women, for correction of Poland Syndrome. This condition is a rare congenital birth defect, where one side of the chest is missing the pectoral muscle, and breast tissue (in women). At our practice in Phoenix, AZ, we can discuss all of your options in reconstructive surgery whether you just want a pectoral implant (for men), or a full reconstruction of one or both breast for symmetry. Come to your consultation prepared to discuss your health history, current health, your aesthetic goals for surgery, and any questions you may have in regards to the risks and benefits of each procedure. Our plastic surgeons will do their best to create the most natural chest and/or breast shape that is realistic for your body type. Call today and schedule your consultation appointment.
FOR WOMEN & MEN
Poland Syndrome correction surgery can be performed for women and men, but with different surgical techniques and plastic surgery outcomes.
Women
Our plastic surgeons recommend that young girls with Poland Syndrome need to wait until after breast development to get the best outcomes from reconstructive surgery, and wear a prosthetic breast until then. Once the breasts are fully developed, women with Poland Syndrome can consult with a plastic surgeon to correct their uneven chest and breasts through various breast reconstruction techniques, such as an implant with a latissimus dorsi flap or autologous reconstruction free tissue transfer. For a more natural result, we recommend the DIEP, PAP, or LTP flap reconstruction.
Men
Boys, age 13 and older, may be considered for this corrective surgery as their chest muscles should be fully developed by that age. These patients may inquire about a fat transfer, or a custom, one-sided pectoral implant fabricated from a synthetic moulage to replace the missing volume. The goal of this surgery for men is for chest symmetry, and our plastic surgeons will consult with males with this congenital issue.
OUR SURGICAL REQUIREMENTS
Your reconstructive surgeon can personalize your treatment and surgical procedures to your own needs and aesthetic goals. In this section, we can discuss two of the commonly used surgeries performed in Poland Syndrome correction. Each patient will discuss with Dr. Torabi the right surgery and procedures best suited for their body.
Synthetic Implants
Using a synthetic implant (saline or silicone) is a common choice in rebuilding the pectoral muscle wall, and for recreating a breast for women if there is enough skin to hold the desired implant.
Autologous Tissue Flap
Using the patient’s own belly fat and skin, called a DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator) flap reconstruction, the surgeon can recreate a breast. If the patient does not have enough abdominal tissue to use, the surgeon may suggest a different procedure, or take the tissue from another part of the body.
Nipple Reconstruction
Nipples can be recreated from the surrounding tissue with areola tattooing, or the entire nipple areolar complex can be tattooed with an advance 3-D technique available at our plastic surgery office.
IN RECOVERY
Depending on the type of procedures you have for correction of Poland Syndrome; your recovery can last between 1 – 6 weeks or more. Your plastic surgeon and nursing staff will discuss risks or complications of your breast surgery before the operation. It is extremely important to learn proper wound care, as infection can be a problem if aftercare and follow-up treatments are not followed. This could cause abnormal scarring in the incision area.
FOLLOW-UP & CONSIDERATIONS
Your plastic surgeon will want to make several follow-up appointments after your surgery. Once you are discharged from the hospital or accredited surgery center, you will need to attend a 1-week post-surgery appointment at the plastic surgery office. If you experience any complications, please do not hesitate to call our office and make an appointment to see the plastic surgeon.
