Breast reconstruction surgery at Elite Plastic Surgery is a procedure that recreates the breasts after a mastectomy. We understand the challenges and emotional stress that come with a breast cancer diagnosis or a genetic predisposition to breast cancer. Our goal is to provide support and improve your experience during this uncertain time. We strive to bridge the gap between cancer treatment and true recovery, returning your self-identity.

Our Approach to Breast Reconstruction at Elite Plastic Surgery

Our approach to breast reconstruction is tailored to each patient, utilizing our expertise in various reconstructive procedures. We have extensive experience in complex breast reconstruction surgeries and have contributed to the advancement of breast surgery through peer-reviewed journal articles.

We believe that informed patients are more satisfied with their results, so we prioritize shared decision-making between patients and physicians. By understanding your expectations and collaborating with our surgeons, we can achieve the most desirable outcomes.

Types of Breast Reconstruction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that eliminates stubborn fat deposits from various body areas like the abdomen, hips, thighs, upper arms, face, knees, calves, and ankles, and can be used with other procedures to achieve desired aesthetic goals, but outcomes may vary depending on the patient.

Breast reconstruction can be done immediately after mastectomy or in a delayed manner. Immediate reconstruction involves performing the reconstruction during the mastectomy surgery itself, either with tissue from another part of your body or with an implant, sometimes combining both methods.

Immediate free flaps, which involve the use of tissue from another part of your body, may require multiple surgeons. A second stage surgery may be necessary for optimizing the aesthetics and performing nipple reconstruction if needed.

Delayed reconstruction is performed after mastectomy or lumpectomy surgery, as well as after radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted therapies. This type of reconstruction is usually done 6 to 12 months after the initial surgery to allow for recovery from other treatments. It may involve the placement of tissue expanders prior to permanent implants or free flap reconstruction.

Delayed-immediate reconstruction is a staged approach that involves some reconstructive surgery during the initial surgery and additional surgery after additional treatments. Tissue expanders are inserted during the mastectomy to preserve the breast shape and skin during radiation treatments. Once radiation is complete and tissues have recovered, the expanders are replaced with a flap from another donor site.

Matching patient and surgeon expectations is crucial for achieving optimal and safe reconstructions. We consider all available reconstructive tools and discuss options with patients to establish personalized goals. We customize our approach to meet your unique needs.

Reconstructive Tools

Our tools for breast reconstruction include tissue expanders, implants, and pedicled flaps such as the latissimus dorsi or rectus abdominis flaps. Second stage autologous breast reconstruction is performed to optimize aesthetic outcomes and address any asymmetry or contour issues. In some cases, oncoplastic reduction may be performed to remove a portion of the breast while preserving its shape and nipple position.

In terms of timing, we aim to enhance your recovery and experience through an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol. This protocol helps reduce the need for narcotic pain medication and shortens the hospital stay. Our multimodal pain regimen includes oral medications and nerve blocks to manage pain effectively. Physical therapy is also an integral part of the recovery process, promoting early ambulation and improving functional outcomes.

Our goal is to help you feel better, return to your normal activities, and regain your self-identity through personalized breast reconstruction and comprehensive support throughout the process.
