We see children as young as 4-years-of-age at Elite Plastic Surgery in Phoenix, AZ for a cosmetic surgery called otoplasty, that improves the size, shape and projection of the ears. This ear surgery, performed by our talented plastic surgeons, Drs. Torabi and Matatov, can also be implemented on adults with no additional risk or complication. It is very common for parents to request a consultation for otoplasty or "ear pinning" for their child to curtail peer bullying or teasing because of their protruding or misshapen ears. If you would like to have a private consultation with our plastic surgeon about your ears or your child's ears, please contact our office and schedule an appointment (the child will need to be present). We hope to build a trusting rapport with you and your child in the process.

Do I Qualify?

Otoplasty patients should be at least 4 years-of-age, and have one of the following concerns:

  • Ears that protrude or stick out from the head
  • Ears that are misshapen from a trauma or congenital defect
  • Ears that are disproportionately large compared to the head

Surgical Technique

Under a general anesthetic, the skin behind the ear is excised in the area where the ear joins to the head. The plastic surgeon will sculpt the ear cartilage to allow it to form into a more natural, symmetrical shape once it has healed with the help dissolvable stitches. This cosmetic procedure is performed in an outpatient setting, and is complete in 1 – 2 hours.

What to Expect

Our otoplasty patients will wear bandages on their ears for 1 week post-op, and will see slight bruising and swelling that should subside in 1 – 2 weeks. Our plastic surgeon may suggest that the patient wear a tennis-style sweatband over the ears at night for 6 – 8 weeks to help with healing. The main aim of otoplasty is to reduce the prominence of the ears, and to create a more natural shape and look to the area.

Other Considerations

Patients are advised to avoid strenuous work for approximately 1– 2 months after their surgery. Children who have otoplasty will need to be closely monitored throughout the healing process, so they do not compromise the healing of their ears or cause agitation by rubbing or scratching.
